Cardboard Cradle

Cardboard is enjoying something of a renaissance furniture-wise, and it does have a lot going for it, what with the recycleableness and the industrial chic thing, and the fact that it's cheap. But how do you feel about cardboard furniture in the nursery?

This cradle here is made of the corrugated stuff, and it sounds good on paper (if you'll s'cuse the pun) it meets EU safety standards, it's customisable, it's lightweight but stable, it's recyclable and it comes with a mattress.

So far my opinion is 'Hmmmmm' and I'm not entirely convinced by the price (it's $107) but it's kind of growing on me. What do you think?

That's incredible. Any chance you can post a picture or a listing of the contents of that KELA box? That might make for a great WBS giveaway!

Wow Ribs, Finland sounds like an excellent place to have a baby! Is there good postpartum community-based care too? I ask because friends in England have had a rather terrible experience with no support AT ALL (theoretically there is meant to be one visit from a community midwife), they didn't find out that their baby wasn't gaining weight at an adequate rate until three weeks after she was born.

Here in Finland we get a bopx of baby stuff from KELA, the Finnish healthcare system. It's really great and the whole idea behind it is that it provides everything you need for a new baby. With that aim in mind, the box itself is designed to work as a cot, coming complete with a foam mattress. Not sure how many people actually use the box for that (we didn't), but I have seen a kind of rocker-extension pack in some shops here.
