We're having a bit of a tough time deciding if we want to incorporate a 'supporting adult' or Godparent role into Ted's naming ceremony, for a few reasons.
The first, less troublesome, reason is that while I love the idea of godparent's I don't necessarily love the title and 'Supporting Adult' seems so impersonal. My cousin Gabe (Who's now at Oxford reading History and of whom we couldn't be prouder) suggested the title 'Goodparent'. It's a variation on the 16th century polite form of address 'goodwife' or 'goodman', it also ties in nicely with the Middle English phrase 'Good Spede' or 'god spede' meaning 'may you prosper'. I absolutely love it.
The second, more difficult, reason is entirely logistical, the people for whom we had the roles earmarked can't make it here in person. Sure the world is getting smaller, but it''s not as small as I would like! We will be setting up a system of webcam's (again, with the nerdy) so that Ted's step great-grandparents and various second cousins can see him on the day and we could do the same with the Godparent's, so they could phone it in, so to speak. Or we might just make a reference to them and why we chose them in our speeches and then have a special dinner with each of them when we're next in England and France and Ireland respectively. It's s hard call.
